Of Hellos and Good Byes

at·tri·tion

Noun: The action or process of gradually reducing the strength or effectiveness of someone or something through sustained attack or pressure.

It’s been almost 2 years now since I’ve started life as a working professional and a lot of things changed but the one that I never counted on changing was my attitude towards the most of the human relations, friends. Me being me, I have never given a second thought about the concept of friendship because they were always there. Through the good times and the bad, so taking them for granted was a given.

Most of us go through school and college without much thought to the kind of the friendships that we are forming, to pause and thank our fortunes for giving us a rare gift, the people that we surround ourselves with. And office has been no different, I have made some fantastic friends during my stint here, most of whom have helped me grow strong. Each of them is like a classic example of abstract art , everyone has a different perspective but still so similar.

People come and go in our lives but in our school and college, the rate at which people come in far exceeds the rate at which people leave. It is only after we leave the cozy comfort they offer and start working, the realization that people are not always there, that life changes, people change, friends leave you to pursue to other things, better things, hits you. It’s like being hit repeatedly which leads to the evolution/attrition of  your idea of friendship. The attrition rate is alarmingly high!  It’s like getting punched in the face by Muhammad Ali, as painful as that!  When a friend with who you have shared all your secrets, all your silliness leaves, they leave an echo of times gone by which can be heard for years to come.

Then I started to wonder…

Should we employ moderation in human relationships? Do we have stop letting people in, because it hurts too much later on? Or do we just learn to deal with the separation of friends in a different manner?

I am still grappling with the question. Haven’t found an answer yet, did you?

Have you ever encountered such a situation, if you have, please do share your thoughts!
